Bridges and bodies of water run like a red thread through the ten-day program: Panta rhei - everything is in flux. All over the world, bridges are being built to new, exciting forms of urbanism, we will get to know them in the USA. Let's get moving!
The journey starts in Detroit, one of the formerly most important industrial cities in the world. Laid out as City Beautiful on a concentric plan from 1805, Detroit quickly developed into a center of industrialization. The rapid rise as Motorcity was followed by its decline in the late 1960s - a development that can be seen in the buildings as an example; Art Déco skyscrapers, cultural buildings, factories and villas bear witness to the city's wealth at the beginning of the 20th century, buildings by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen and Victor Gruen from the post-war period are artifacts of urban renewal and a modernism imported by European architects. The traces of the withdrawal of industries are just as exciting: the river is clean, the city has been thinned out, nature is reclaiming the open spaces. Creative people move in and let the city bloom anew.
The overland bus takes you to Pittsburgh, a former stronghold of the steel industry, which is not only shown by numerous bridges, but also by impressive metal facades on the houses of Dowtown, the city located at the confluence of two rivers.
One of the highlights is the tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Kaufmann House, completed in 1939 and made history as Fallingwater House, one of the most impressive private houses of the modern era. Equally great is the Andy Warhol Museum, which has the largest retrospective of Warhol, the most important representative of Pop Art, who was born and raised in Pittsburgh.
New York marks the brilliant conclusion of this very special USA tour, where a large number of new buildings have been built in the last ten years: The National September 11 Memorial at Ground Zero, Santiago Calatrava's World Trade Center PATH Station, the super slender skyscrapers and the Hudson Yards Quarter is to be visited. The new Whitney Museum of American Art by Renzo Piano, located on the High Line, is also on the program, as is the New Art Museum by SANAA. Housed in the Hotel The Standard, there is a wonderful view of the Hudson River and the High Line, a former high-altitude railway line that has been adapted as a promenade.
Last but not least, the view from many a rooftop bar in all 3 cities provides both a fine overview and a good atmosphere!
